Experimental Case Study

Hey guys! For my lead blog, we're going to do things differently. I hope this activity turns out to be very fun (a break from our strenuous academic responsibilities) and isn’t too time-consuming. You will need probably over an hour to complete the following assignment (sorry if that’s inconvenient). But, the assignment does mostly involve watching TV. So, hopefully this is a fun assignment! :)

While conducting research for my 3rd essay, I stumbled across an excellent case study conducted with undergraduate students from a large Midwestern urban University. After studying the procedures/results, I thought it would be interesting if we conducted a simpler experiment in our class and see if we draw a similar or different conclusion. Due to possible bias, I will not disclose any information about the experiment until after you've participated in the survey. In order to complete this assignment, you must read my previous post. But, do NOT read until after you’ve completely finished the following steps.

Step 1: Watch Friends "The One In Vegas: Part 1" (Season 5, Episode 23)

Step 2: After watching the entire episode (please if you can), answer the following questions in your blog post:

1) Overall Percieved Funniness: How would you rate the funniness in this episode? 0 = not at all funny, 5 = moderately funny, and 10 = extremely funny.

2) Overall Reported Enjoyment: How would you rate your overall enjoyment of this episode? 0 = not at all enjoyable, 5 = moderately enjoyable, and 10 = extremely enjoyable.

3) Types of Humor Evident in the Episode: In your blog post please list which of the following types of humor you believe were present in the episode: (Do NOT list the forms on humor you believe WEREN'T present in the episode)
~Putdown humor
~Wordplay humor
~Slapstick

~Joking around to fit in
~Joking socially
~Self-deprecation
~Incongruity
~People doing stupid things
~Dark humor
~Sick humor
~A sight gag
~Naughty humor

Step 3: Watch The Office "The Dundies" (Season 2, Episode 1)

Step 4: After watching the entire episode (please if you can), answer the following questions in your blog post:

1) Overall Perceived Funniness: How would you rate the funniness in this episode? 0 = not at all funny, 5 = moderately funny, and 10 = extremely funny.

2) Overall Reported Enjoyment: How would you rate your overall enjoyment of this episode? 0 = not at all enjoyable, 5 = moderately enjoyable, and 10 = extremely enjoyable.

3) Types of Humor Evident in the Episode: In your blog post please list which of the following types of humor you believe were present in the episode: (Do NOT list the forms on humor you believe WEREN'T present in the episode)

Step 5: Now that you've completed all the previous steps it's time to find out what type of experiment you've just participated in! I hope participating was fun and filled with many laughs! **I realize if you do not have Netflix you were unable to participate in the experiment. Please still read my previous post to learn more about the science behind laughter...specifically the science behind...
